Sen. Stella Oduah also shares her thoughts on Gender Equality Bills

Former Nigerian Minister of Aviation and Minister representing Anambra North Senatorial District, Senator Princess Stella Oduah, has also shared her thoughts on the Gender Equality Bill that was trashed out by the Senate Tuesday. Read her thoughts below;

This very important bill sponsored by my colleague, Senator Biodun Olujimi representing Ekiti South Senatorial District, seeking to promote equal opportunities, advancement of all persons, prohibition of violence against women amongst many others, as a result of disagreements, failed to pass the second reading.

As we look forward to the rebirth of the #GEOBill, It is pertinent that we all join forces to enlighten our countrymen on how vital this Bill is to our progress as a modern State.

As a nation, we endorsed the The United Nations Convention On The Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women and it is time, we domesticated it in Nigeria. We must see mainstreaming of women programs not as favours, but as what is right.

As a nation we should go beyond empowering of women to empowering the society. There is no doubt that Nigeria has untapped potentials in women which we must explore. Women have wonderful innate skills and we must provide enabling environment for growth and full development of their potentials.
The fact that we are still discussing equal right for women in 2016 is unacceptable.

I have always emphasized the indispensable role of women in nation building. It is also no longer news that women are the bedrock of governance and should be allowed equal opportunities to represent the true meaning of their existence.

At the just concluded International Women's Day which took place on March 8 2016, I pledged ‪#‎Genderparity and look forward to ‪#‎Planet5050for women all over the world.

Finally, it is also important for Nigerians especially my colleagues to note that this is not an issue of patriarchy as women are first of all human beings, who have rights before their ultimate role as mothers and therefore should be allowed equal opportunities.
